The Pharmacy Department recently received a letter from Sanofi-Aventis stating that Vaponefrin (Racemic Epinephrine) will be discontinued from the market. Currently, there is no other racemic epinephrine 2.25% product available.

The alternative for use as nebulized epinephrine therapy is Epinephrine 1:1000 solution (Adrenalin Topical Solution). Please note the difference in concentration from 2.25% to 0.1%.

Recommended Dose:

Pediatrics:

” Less than 4 years old: 2.5 mL epinephrine 1:1000 per dose (delivers 2.5 mg epinephrine).

This may be further diluted to 4-5 mL with normal saline.

” 4 years or older: 5 mL epinephrine 1:1000 per dose (delivers 5 mg of epinephrine). No need to further dilute this dose.

Adults:

” 5 mL epinephrine 1:1000 per dose (delivers 5 mg of epinephrine). No need to further dilute this dose.

Dosing Intervals:

” Same as for racemic epinephrine

Availability:

” Epinephrine 1:1000 is available as a nasal solution (Adrenalin Topical solution) ” We will be changing wardstock over to the new product on Thurs. March 15, 2007.
