Mercury Risk: Jury’s Out (Flu Vaccination) : Should You Insist on a Mercury-Free Flu Shot for Your Child? October 29, 2012

Mercury Risk: Jury’s Out
Do you need to worry about mercury in the first place? Researchers battle back and forth over this issue. We’ve known for decades that mercury is toxic to the brain and body tissues. But whether or not the amount in vaccines is enough to cause damage is still up in the air. Some research shows there is enough evidence of harm; other studies have found there is not enough proof that the mercury in vaccines is dangerous. However, no study has yet to prove for certain that this mercury is safe.
Because we just don’t know yet for sure, in my opinion it’s better to just skip the flu shot (unless you have a chronic medical condition that makes the flu risky for you) if you can’t find one without mercury.

Critical risk factors for immediate complications-Intubation in the I.C.U. June 3, 2012
Posted by admin in : Education/Studies, Featured Articles, Multimedia Library, PowerPoint , comments closedPOWERPOINT
Tracheal intubation (TI) is a routine procedure in the intensive care unit (ICU), and is often life saving. However, life-threatening complications occur in a significant proportion of procedures, making TI perhaps one the most common but underappreciated airway emergencies in the ICU. In contrast to the controlled conditions in the operating room (OR), the unstable physiologic state of critically ill patients along with underevaluation of the airways and suboptimal response to pre-oxygenation are the major factors for the high incidence of life-threatening complications like severe hypoxaemia and cardiovascular collapse in the ICU.

PDF One Lung Ventilation
One lung ventilation (OLV) is a technique that allows isolation of the individual lungs under anaesthesia. Safe implementation of this technique requires an understanding of specialist airway equipment, and of the physiological changes that occur during the procedure.
It is necessary to emphasize that endobronchial intubation, with these specific airway adjuncts, and OLV, may significantly add to the anaesthetic risk, resulting from trauma to the airways, and failure of adequate ventilation.
Indications for One lung ventilation
There are four main indications for one-lung anaesthesia:
1. Isolation of the lungs
2. To improve surgical access
3. Greater control over ventilation
4. Unilateral bronchopulmonary lavage
